This guide walks you through the full high-level Praxis workflow: adding songs, organizing folders and playlists, managing tags, using sorting and filtering, and moving from Library to Player with a clean, predictable queue.
Step 1: Add Songs to the Library
Start by importing media files. You can drag audio files or folders directly into the Library, or use File > Import....
- Select one or more audio files, or a folder that contains songs.
- Praxis copies imported media into its managed library so your playlists stay stable even if original files move later.
- Your imported songs appear in All Songs and are ready to organize.
Step 2: Build Folder and Playlist Structure
The left panel is where you organize your practice world. Use folders for structure and playlists for the actual song lists you play.
- Create folders and playlists from the context menu (right-click) or File menu.
- Drag playlists into folders to organize by band, set, season, rehearsal cycle, or project.
- Reorder folders/playlists with drag-and-drop to match your workflow.
- A song can exist in multiple playlists without duplicating the media file.
Step 3: Add Songs to Playlists
Select one or more songs in the right panel and add/move them to playlists from the context menu, or drag directly where supported. This is the fastest way to build rehearsal sets and performance-ready lists.
Step 4: Edit Song Metadata
Keep metadata clean so searching, filtering, and sorting remain fast and reliable.
- Edit fields like title, artist, album, key, tuned offset, BPM, and notes.
- Quick edit shortcut: select a row and press Tab to begin, Enter to save, Escape to cancel.
Step 5: Manage Tags
Tags are lightweight labels for classification and fast retrieval.
- Add tags to songs for things like “Needs Tabs,” “Capo,” “Worship,” or “Acoustic Set.”
- Edit tag assignments from song actions/context menus.
- Remove tags from individual songs without deleting the song.
- Use the Tags section in the left panel to view all songs that share a specific tag.
Step 6: Sort and Filter the Library
The right panel is your active song view. Use sorting and filtering to quickly shape what you see and what you will play.
- Click column headers to sort by that column (for example: title, artist, BPM, key, time).
- Click again to reverse sort direction.
- Use the filter box to narrow the list in real time.
- Filtering is designed for fast retrieval and practice flow, not just catalog maintenance.
Step 7: Understand Queue Behavior
In Praxis, the queue is always based on your current library view.
- If All Songs is selected, queue = full library (or filtered subset).
- If a playlist is selected, queue = that playlist (or filtered subset).
- If a folder is selected, queue = combined songs from playlists inside it.
This keeps playback predictable: what you see is what you queue.
Step 8: Start Playing
Double-click any song in the right panel to open the Player at that song. From there you can control transport, skip intervals, repeat, tempo, gain, volume, and lyrics/tab display.
