Podcasting 2.0 and Publisher Features
A practical map of rich metadata, alternate sources, live programming, collections, and advanced services still on the roadmap.
Coming soon. Passage has not been released. This guide previews the current development version; controls and availability may change before launch.
Richer feeds, useful controls
Podcasting 2.0 gives publishers ways to describe more than an episode title and audio URL. Passage reads supported namespace metadata and brings useful parts into discovery, show details, Episode Information, and Now Playing.
The current scope includes chapter and transcript documents, people and credits, locations, season/episode labels, licenses, funding links, soundbites, artwork, trailers, related shows, publisher collections, and live items. Availability depends on the feed and document quality.
Alternate audio and integrity
When a publisher advertises alternate enclosures, Passage can offer publisher-default, standard, smaller-file, or higher-quality preferences, plus an explicit episode source choice. Failover handling aims to preserve listening context where a usable alternate exists.
Supported integrity metadata can verify advertised strong hashes for downloads. That is a specific integrity check, not a statement that Passage cryptographically trusts every publisher or has completed all signature-verification mechanisms.
Related shows and collections
Publisher relationships and podroll metadata can point to other shows. Passage resolves supported references into previews, including available feed-URL and directory/GUID paths. Collection feeds are treated as collections rather than ordinary shows to run episode rules against.
A publisher can label hosting-transfer or distribution restrictions. Passage can display the relevant information without inventing a listening restriction that the field does not actually mean.
Funding, value, social, and chat
Funding links can take you to a publisher’s support destination. Supported value information can be displayed without turning on a wallet or sending money. Social discussion links can open a publisher’s selected destination. Chat metadata can describe a protocol/server/space without creating a native chat session.
Native wallet/payment adapters, native social/chat provider adapters, trusted-key PGP verification, and a Podping receiver/service remain roadmap work. Parsing a tag is not the same as delivering that service. Passage does not advertise complete end-to-end support for every Podcasting 2.0 feature.
Supporting Passage through its optional StoreKit purchases is separate from supporting a podcast publisher. A Passage keepsake does not pay a podcast’s value recipients or buy access to a private feed.
Graceful fallback
Ordinary RSS podcasts remain useful without these extensions. Missing or malformed optional metadata should not make core listening depend on adopting the entire ecosystem. If a rich feature does not appear, inspect what the feed actually publishes before assuming it is a library problem.
