Passage on Mac

Native desktop library, keyboard controls, Now Playing, audio output selection, volume, and file management.

Coming soon. Passage has not been released. This guide previews the current development version; controls and availability may change before launch.

A desktop listening library

Passage’s native Mac app uses a sidebar for discovery, shows and follows, playlists, audiobooks, imported episodes, and useful collections. Select an indented follow to manage its rules. Native multi-selection and context actions help with download and playlist organization.

The app keeps its library and playback surfaces in a single window, with panels/cards for relevant controls. It remembers the last sidebar section across launch; this is section restoration, not a promise to reconstruct every nested navigation stack.

Now Playing and queue

Command-I opens Now Playing. Inspect episode notes, available chapters and transcripts, language choices, and Up Next. Timed chapters and transcript cues can seek the current recording. Starting a filtered playlist uses the visible list as queue context.

A persistent playback popover exposes speed, Gap Reduction choices, Voice Enhance, and Volume Leveling with global/show scope. The sleep timer is available from the player bar. Gap Reduction’s current development limitation applies on Mac too.

Audio Output

The Audio Output control is available even when no episode is selected. Its in-window card provides Passage volume, mute, an output picker, and the current system-output name. Close or Escape dismisses it.

App volume and mute affect Passage; they do not change another app’s gain or the system volume setting. Their values and the preferred output remain local to this Mac and persist across launch.

Choose System Default to follow the Mac’s selected output, or a currently available device. Bluetooth and AirPlay destinations must first be made available to macOS. Passage’s picker is not a new wireless-device discovery service. If a device disappears, the implementation requests pause before fallback; reconnection does not request automatic playback. Physical route behavior is still being qualified.

Keyboard controls

  • Command-I: open Now Playing.
  • Command-Option-Up / Down: change Passage volume by five percentage points.
  • Command-Option-M: toggle Passage mute.
  • Escape: dismiss the Audio Output card.

System hardware-volume keys continue to control the operating system’s volume. Other native menu commands show their shortcuts in the app.

File and book management

Import audio through native file selection or supported file dropping. Mac book tools include metadata/chapter editing, Add Files, completion/reset, source inspection/relinking, audio export, and local removal. OPML import/export moves feed lists; Back Up Library exports settings and metadata without audio/artwork.

Optional iCloud features share supported library state with phone/tablet while leaving the Mac’s output choices and queue local.
