Audiobooks and Chapter Management

Import your own audio, combine files, edit book details and chapter names, manage progress, and safely relink sources.

Coming soon. Passage has not been released. This guide previews the current development version; controls and availability may change before launch.

Bring your own audiobook audio

Passage is a player for audiobook audio you can import; it is not a bookstore and does not provide a paid audiobook catalog. Choose one or more readable audio files in the file picker. Files must be accessible to the app and playable by the platform’s audio tools. A protected store download is not automatically an importable audio file.

The importer reads available title, album, author/artist, narrator, track/disc order, artwork, duration, and embedded chapters. When there are no embedded chapters, it creates a chapter entry for each source file. Multi-file books can therefore be kept together rather than scattered across an episode list.

The Mac app also supports file dropping. Select all intended parts for the import and check their ordering afterward. Original filenames and source information help identify an out-of-order or missing part.

Correct book details

Edit the book’s title, author, narrator, description, and chapter names. This is useful when a folder of numbered files has incomplete metadata or the publisher used track names that do not read well in a chapter list.

Add Files can append missing source parts to an existing book. Chapter entries follow source ordering and timing. The native Mac editor provides metadata/chapter management, file inspection, export, and relinking workflows. Custom artwork editing is not promised in the current release scope.

Keep progress at book and chapter level

Open the chapter list to start or resume a section. Passage keeps listening progress and supports marking a book finished or resetting it for another listen. Completion is a library choice; removing a local audio copy is a storage choice.

A chapter is a segment of a particular source file. Replacing it with a different edition can change both timing and content. To preserve reliable progress, Passage verifies audio identity rather than matching only a title or filename.

Missing source files

On Mac, use source inspection and relinking when an original source is missing. Choose the original matching audio. A different recording with the same filename is rejected for a relink intended to preserve timing and progress. Import a different edition as a different book instead of treating its timestamps as interchangeable.

Duplicate-source checks help prevent the same audio from being committed twice. If an import fails, check local free space, file readability, and whether the cloud file provider has finished making the source available.

Listening on another device

Optional library sync can connect independently imported copies using file fingerprints and chapter timing. Both devices need compatible, verified audio before adopting nonzero progress. The same title alone is insufficient.

Optional audiobook file transfer is separate. Turn it on per device to move verified audio, artwork, and portable chapter data through iCloud Drive. Choose automatic or per-book downloads according to local storage needs. A synced book record without its local audio is not yet an offline book.
