Gap Reduction: Development Preview

Off, Mild, Medium, and Aggressive pause controls, their purpose, and the current qualification boundary.

Coming soon. Passage has not been released. This guide previews the current development version; controls and availability may change before launch.

Current availability

Gap Reduction is still in development and undergoing listening qualification. It is disabled for downloaded episodes in ordinary Release builds today. Development or listening-test builds can expose behavior that is not enabled in a public release. Passage has not launched, and final availability will be confirmed before launch.

The intended listening benefit

Playback speed changes how quickly speech is delivered. Gap Reduction is intended to shorten eligible pauses while preserving the words and a natural sense of cadence. A slow conversation can therefore become more compact without requiring the same increase in speaking speed.

The settings offer Off, Mild, Medium, and Aggressive. Mild keeps more pause time; Aggressive aims to remove more. These names describe relative treatment, not a promised amount of saved time or a guarantee that every quiet interval should be shortened.

Why qualification matters

A quiet passage can contain a softly spoken word, breath, room tone, music, or deliberate dramatic timing. Removing it incorrectly can damage the recording. Passage’s development work therefore treats speech preservation and clean joins as essential, alongside responsiveness and pause reduction.

The current system processes bounded local audio windows in development playback. A selected level can change how a prepared window is played. This is separate from proving quality across different voices, recordings, speeds, and output devices.

How to use a test build responsibly

If you have an authorized development build with Gap Reduction enabled, start with Off and compare a familiar passage at the same speed. Try Mild before stronger levels. Listen for quiet syllables, clipped words, abrupt joins, and changes in dramatic pacing. Record the source and approximate time of a problem for support.

Turning Voice Enhance or Volume Leveling on does not qualify Gap Reduction or make it available on an unsupported source. A saved Gap Reduction preference can exist even when the current playback path cannot apply it.

This page will be updated when the release behavior is qualified. It does not claim parity with another app or a measured real-world speech-error rate.
